A devastating earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale shook Nepal at 11:56 a.m. on Saturday, April 25. The quake was felt throughout the region and more than 64 aftershocks continue to rock the country, with some measuring 6.6 on the Richter scale. According to the Emergency Operation Centre of the Nepalese Ministry of Home Affairs, the death toll from Saturday has reached 2,791. Thousands more are injured. These figures are likely to rise with each passing hour.
In response to the disaster, St. Andrew’s is working through its ministry partnership network to quickly provide emergency assistance to survivors. Donated funds will initially be funneled through a Nepalese church network, known as the “Disaster Relief Christian Community” (DRCC). The focus of the DRCC will be to provide relief efforts that prioritize the distribution of tents, mattresses, food, medical support and advocacy.
